President’s Letter – December 2016

Luis San Miguel
US Navy League Madrid Council – President

I have been your President since last July and I must say that the last five months have passed so quickly that I still see myself representing the Madrid Council at The Marin Naval Academy Graduation ceremonies last July 15th, which was my first function as President of the NL Madrid Council.

Since then all of us on the Board of Directors have been working hard to organize activities that would be interesting to our members.

Last July at that Marin ceremony I had the pleasure to meet the then Minister of Defense Mr. Pedro Morenes, the President of Galicia Mr. Alberto Nuñez Feijoo and the then Minister of Infrastructures Mrs. Ana Pastor.

After the Marin ceremony we had on July 18th our only informal Dress Code Dinner of the year, honoring the top cadet graduating this year from the Naval Academy. Our speaker that night was Admiral Juan Rodriguez Garat who gave a good humored and enjoyable speech.

After the vacation period of August we held a dinner on September 22. The guest speaker that evening was the Honorable Ambassador of Malaysia  to Spain Mr. Kennedy Jawan who spoke to us about investments in Malaysia.

To start October, on the 7th NL Member Gabriel Cortina organized a visit for a group of us to the NASA Satellite Tracking Station in Robledo De Chabela. The director of the site  gave us a tour of the facilities.

October 14th saw the Navy League Madrid Council holding our annual Gala commemorating the 241st Anniversary of the creation of The US Navy . The Gala was attended by over 100 guests and it was a successful evening.

On October 22nd, representing the Madrid Council, I attended the US Navy Ball at the Rota Naval base where I met the US ambassador, Honorable  Mr. James Costos and the commander of US Naval activities in Spain, Captain Tabrin MacNicholl.

Last November 12th I attended the 241st US Marine Corps  Birthday Ball in Madrid, once again representing the NL Madrid Council.

On November 17th we had our monthly dinner, this time with guest speaker Mr. Jesus Alonso, President and CEO of WIRESA. He explained to us the technical  characteristics of the products and companies they represent.

Finally in December we are all working on preparing the Madrid visit of our USNL President and the NL President of the European Region next January.

Our future activities that are already confirmed are to host US NL National President Mr. Skip Witunski, who will be a guest speaker at our January 18th dinner. Mr. Witunski will be accompanied by Mr. Nick Hayes, President European Region and Chair of the International Committee USNL and Past President Madrid Council. Also attending will be the President of the Barcelona NL Council, Mr. Salvador Molist, the President of the Levante Council, Mr. John Power and the President of the Rota Council, Mrs. Patricia Rios.

Looking further into 2017, we have already confirmed on January 25th a group visit to the CESEDEN.

On February 23rd, at our monthly dinner we have confirmed as our guest speaker Mr. Javier Vega de Seoane, President of the Circulo de Empresarios de España. Also in February we are working on a group visit to La Bolsa de Madrid (Spain’s Stock Exchange) which we will confirm in January.

I want to thank you for all of your support, especially our Board of Directors and personally our Past President Molly Long and our Secretary Mal Murphy who really did help me out a lot in conducting the tasks of the presidency. We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming events.

I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and the Best for the New Year.

Luis San Miguel

President NL Madrid Council.
